Maps & cloud sync

Manage multiple maps, back them up to the cloud, sync across devices and watch your storage.

A DropMaps map is a saved collection of layers, styles and settings. You can keep many, and — on a paid plan — back them up to the cloud and sync them across devices.

The Maps manager

Click the map name in the toolbar to open the Maps manager.

  • New map — name it, add an optional description, and (if you’re on a paid plan) toggle Back up to the cloud.
  • Import — open an exported map file (e.g. a .dmap) or drag one in.
  • Layer Catalog — pull layers from your other maps (see Adding layers).
  • Each map in the list can be Opened, renamed (double-click), Exported or Deleted. A search box appears once you have several maps.

Signed in, you’ll also see In the cloud (maps saved on another device — Download & open to pull them here) and Shared with me (maps others have shared — see Sharing).

Local-first, always

The editor is free and fully local — every map and layer is cached in your browser and reappears after a reload, with nothing uploaded unless you choose to. Export a backup any time to keep a safe copy you can re-import.

Local-only data lives in this browser on this device. If you clear browser data or switch devices it can be lost — so either export backups, or turn on cloud sync.

Cloud sync

Cloud sync and backup are a Pro feature. Once signed in on a paid plan:

  • The cloud chip in the toolbar shows each map’s state — Synced, Syncing, Queued, Dirty, Error or Local only. Click it for details.
  • In the Cloud sync dialog, Keep this map live in the cloud turns automatic sync on or off. Edits — features, symbology, layers — sync across your signed-in devices.
  • Turning sync off lets you choose what happens to the copies: keep both, remove the cloud copy, remove from this device, or delete everywhere.

Storage

The Storage tab (in the Menu) shows usage for both Cloud and Local (this device), broken down by vector, tiles, raster, photos/attachments and other.

  • A usage bar warns when you’re near or over your quota (uploads are blocked when over).
  • Buy more storage adds +10 GB packs; you can Remove a pack at renewal.
  • Clear all photos, and the Danger zone options to clear local, cloud or everything, free up space — each is permanent.
  • Layers not used by any map show up as orphans you can reuse or remove from the Layer Catalog.

Large rasters and tiles (COG, PMTiles) can also back up to the cloud and stream to your other devices — you’ll be prompted when you add one.
