Convert a shapefile to GeoJSON — free

DropMaps opens your shapefile on a map so you can check it looks right, then saves it as GeoJSON. It all happens in your browser — your file never leaves your computer.

    How to do it

    1. A shapefile is several files (.shp, .shx, .dbf and .prj) — put them together in one .zip. Most shapefiles you download are already zipped.
    2. Drop your zipped shapefile file into the box above — or click “choose a file” to pick it from your device.
    3. Click “Convert to GeoJSON”. DropMaps opens in a new tab with your file on the map, so you can check it looks right.
    4. The save options open by themselves, with GeoJSON highlighted. Click it and the file downloads straight away.

    Questions

    Will the coordinates be converted?

Yes. GeoJSON normally uses latitude and longitude, so the data is converted from the shapefile’s coordinate system for you.

Can I change the data before converting?

Yes. Close the save options, edit values in the table, delete features or remove columns, then choose Export… from the layer’s menu.

    Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is opened right in your browser, on your own computer. Nothing is sent to us unless you choose to save the map to a DropMaps account.

    Is it really free?

Yes. Opening, viewing, editing and exporting files is free, with no signup needed. An account is only needed if you want to save maps to the cloud or share them with a link.
