    How to do it

    1. A shapefile is several files (.shp, .shx, .dbf and .prj) — put them together in one .zip. Most shapefiles you download are already zipped.
    2. Drop your zipped shapefile file into the box above — or click “choose a file” to pick it from your device.
    3. Click “Open in DropMaps”. DropMaps opens in a new tab with your file already on the map.
    4. The shapes appear on the map. Click one to see its details, or open the table to see them all.

    Questions

Why does the shapefile need to be zipped?

A shapefile is really several files that only work together (.shp for shapes, .dbf for the data, .prj for the location system). Zipping them keeps them together so nothing goes missing.

My shapefile is in a local coordinate system. Will it line up?

Yes, as long as the .prj file is included. DropMaps reads it and places the data in the right spot on the map.

    Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is opened right in your browser, on your own computer. Nothing is sent to us unless you choose to save the map to a DropMaps account.

    Is it really free?

Yes. Opening, viewing, editing and exporting files is free, with no signup needed. An account is only needed if you want to save maps to the cloud or share them with a link.
