    How to do it

    1. A shapefile is several files (.shp, .shx, .dbf and .prj) — put them together in one .zip. Most shapefiles you download are already zipped.
    2. Drop your zipped shapefile file into the box above — or click “choose a file” to pick it from your device.
    3. Click “Convert to KML”. DropMaps opens in a new tab with your file on the map, so you can check it looks right.
    4. The save options open by themselves, with KML highlighted. Click it and the file downloads straight away.

    Questions

Will it open in Google Earth?

Yes. The KML opens in Google Earth, Google My Maps and most GPS and mapping apps, and it is always saved in latitude and longitude, which is what those apps expect.

Can I change the data before converting?

Yes. Close the save options, edit values in the table, delete features or remove columns, then choose Export… from the layer’s menu.

    Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is opened right in your browser, on your own computer. Nothing is sent to us unless you choose to save the map to a DropMaps account.

    Is it really free?

Yes. Opening, viewing, editing and exporting files is free, with no signup needed. An account is only needed if you want to save maps to the cloud or share them with a link.
